Cruise in spacious comfort to Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas National Park aboard the Yankee Freedom III, a high-speed ocean-going catamaran specifically designed for carrying passengers safely across the 70 miles of open water from Key West to the Park. The Yankee Freedom III is 110’ long and 30.6’ wide, a broad and stable vessel certified to carry 250 passengers; however, to maximize the comfort of each guest, we limit each tour at 175 passengers. Our veteran captain and friendly crew will take you on a day trip to one of the most unique and spectacular national parks in the United States: The Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Jefferson. Almost 70 miles west of Key West, nestled among coral reefs, and white sandy beaches, lie seven remote islands called the Dry Tortugas. This backcountry adventure eco tour combines three great Key West adventures into one day: a Key West schooner sail, a guided kayak tour of mangrove islands and a snorkel tour of sponge gardens. Discover the diverse ecosystem of Key West’s backcountry in one awesome all-day tour.
This intimate nature tour is limited to only 16 passengers, providing you with ample seating and room to spread out for your relaxing day on the tropical water. Departing from Key West’s Historic Seaport, the Appledore Star’s sails are unfurled for an authentic sail experience on the way to Key West’s backcountry. If you always wanted to sail a tall mast wooden ship, this is your chance to help raise the sails and take a turn at the wheel. We encourage passenger participation!
The trip includes a fresh continental breakfast to start your tour, offering such goodies as fresh pastries, quiche, tropical fruit and fruit juices.
Your day is spent exploring Key West’s uninhabited mangrove islands in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. The shallow-drafted schooner is the perfect design for your eco adventure, being a replica of historic boats that dragged for oysters in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. Keep an eye out for dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and many other wildlife that call the Refuge home. Your captain knows where dolphins are frequently seen and will let you know if he spots any.
Upon reaching the mangrove islands, the schooner anchors up and our exploration begins. Your day is divided between guided kayaking tours and guided snorkeling tours. For kayaking, your crew will help you into your stable sea kayak, providing paddling instructions. Don’t worry if you aren’t used to paddling – the warm, shallow water is calm, sheltered by the uninhabited mangroves, making kayaking a breeze. This is where you will experience the best kayaking in Key West.
On your kayaking tour, the crew talks about the mangroves and their important role as nurseries to the sea. Learn how mangrove trees survive in salt water and about the varied marine life that inhabit Key West’s unique mangrove ecosystem. Did you know that several hundred species of birds call these mangroves home? On a typical day, you may see ospreys, frigates, blue herons, bald eagles and even roseate spoonbills. In the water, look for sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays and tropical fish.
You also have the opportunity to get in the water on a guided snorkel tour. Your experienced crew provides professional instructions on snorkeling along with information on the sponge gardens. Never snorkeled? No worries – the crew answers all your questions. Soon you are enjoying your snorkel tour of the shallow, calm waters of the sponge gardens. Take in the tropical fish, sponges, and marine wildlife that call the gardens home. Prefer to float on the surface or new to the water? Grab a noodle, lean back and watch the clouds drift by.
Conditions vary throughout the different areas of the mangrove islands. Priding themselves on providing their guests with the best experience possible, your experienced captain will chart a course for the optimal kayaking and snorkeling locations given that day’s tides and weather conditions.
After your tours, come back aboard and wash off with our fresh water rinse. Find a comfortable spot to relax on deck. Choose from plenty of complimentary cold drinks – frosty cold beer, wine, Sebago’s homemade sangria, chilled sodas and filtered water. This is the best of laid-back island living.
Lunch is also served on the boat, an all-you-can-eat fresh buffet feast. Start with peel & eat shrimp and delicious fried chicken. Move on to a selection of deli meats and cheeses accompanied by assorted breads and condiments. Don’t forget to try Sebago’s own side salads!
Once the day winds down, its time to raise anchor and leave the mangrove islands behind. Refresh yourself with another tasty beverage, including our tropical homemade sangria. Enjoy an afternoon snack of freshly made chocolate chip cookies, chips and dip, and seasonal fruits. Relax and enjoy your brisk sail back to the Historic Seaport as a memorable day in Key West draws to a close.

Afternoon Dolphin Watch
Our afternoon dolphin watch is limited to an intimate number of passengers. Enjoy sailing aboard a 60′ catamaran to the dolphin playground to view wild dolphins play and frolic in their natural habitat. Atlantic bottlenose dolphins are the most common dolphins found around Key West. Enjoy an up close view of dolphin pods as they swim and jump around the boat.
Did you know…Bottlenose dolphins can grow to be up to 13 feet long and they can weigh anywhere from 300 lbs to 1400 lbs! They can live at least 40 years with some females outlive males at 60 years or more and can swim up to 22mph

The Locals Lounge, is designed to allow guests to experience the waters around Key West as so many locals do, visiting little known, breathtakingly beautiful spots with small groups of friends while enjoying great food and drinks in a relaxed and casual environment. No structured activities. Do as much or as little as you want. After all, you’re on vacation!

The day begins as we depart Key West Bight and set sail into the shallow backcountry waters that Key West is famous for. Enjoy a full continental breakfast prepared fresh daily by our own catering kitchen, including muffins, fresh fruit and egg frittatas. Grab a mimosa as we sail to our destination, a beautiful and deserted shallow water anchorage where we will begin our lounge! Once anchored, the bar is open and the music on as the crew deploys floats, floating Bote boards and a water mat for guests to relax and lounge the day away. For those looking for activity, kayaks, snorkel gear, boat games and more are also available. Swim, lounge on a float or enjoy boat games in these warm shallow waters. Do as much or as little as you’d like! It’s up to you!
When fully settled, lunch is served! A delicious buffet lunch of shrimp cocktail, BBQ pork sliders, veggie wraps an assortment of sides, salads and more will be served, along with mimosa bar, ice cold beer, wine, sangria, soft drinks and water.
